ANNOUNCING 5 x DAY AFTRS LOCATION DEPARTMENT INTENSIVE

ALMG’S FIRST PROJECT WITH AFTRS!

ALMG is proud to announce in collaboration with the learning design team at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and experienced ALMG members Luke Torrevillas and Drew Rhodes, the development of a new 5 x day Location Department Intensive. (Read more about key ALMG location course consultants below.)

The course will be first presented by the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) by experienced ALMG members and will provide an in-depth introduction to the locations department covering the skills and knowledge required to successfully scout and manage a film site. Students taking part in the course will receive a 6-month ALMG membership, access to the newsletter, as well as resources and ALMG location crew connections.

Robbie Miles AFTRS Head of Industry and Alumni Engagement states:

We are thrilled to partner with the ALMG to deliver this course that combines AFTRS educational excellence with active industry expertise. In our frequent consultations with production companies and screen agencies the need for more location managers stands alongside line producers and production accountants as a critical skills gap around the country. Each course run will be delivered by a local ALMG member to ensure that vital local knowledge is as much a part of the experience as the practical elements needed in the locations department.

INTRODUCING ALMG LOCATION COURSE CONSULTANTS

Drew Rhodes, Supervising Location Manager and ALMG VIC State Representative

DREW RHODES

Drew is currently the ALMG State Representative for Victoria and sits on the board for Melbourne Screen Hub. With a career spanning over 20 years, Drew has worked on over 50 television series and films and has scouted and shot everything from dairy farms to deserts, big homes to bedsits, city rooftops to underground gold mines. Drew has made a career out of a line of work that he fell into largely because of his “passion for film” and because he “doesn’t mind a chat.” Notable projects include recently released comedy feature Ricky Stanicky, mini-series The Clearing, and dramas The Pacific, Animal Kingdom, The Dressmaker and The Leftovers.

Drew has extensive experience designing short courses and workshops for students and emerging filmmakers with Media Mentors, AFTRS and the VCA.

Location Manager Luke Torrevillas also finds himself behind the camera!

LUKE TORREVILLAS

Location Manager and Aerial Cinematographer Luke Torrevillas, is the business owner of Ecomlocations and Locations Aircrew. Luke has worked in the arts sector since the mid ’90s, and due to his love of film, established a short film screening program that ran for over 7 years at The Side on Café.  During this time, Luke started facilitating off-shore productions in a niche Asian Market – predominantly India, Philippines, and China and he locally freelanced as a producer for small boutique production houses including The Attic, Ambience Entertainment, Mesh 22, The Post Op Group, Klink Design and Ticket to Ride to name a few. Recent long-form projects include ABC’s Significant Others and pre-production for Foxtel’s Fighting Season and Disney’s The Artful Dodger.

In 2021 Luke created a 4-day Location workshop for Screen NSW and 2022, in collaboration with Screenworks, and supported by Screen NSW & Byron Bay Studios, Luke delivered the Northern NSW Locations Workshop - a 4 x day intensive program with the aim of training professionals with transferrable skills from other industries to join the locations department. Several of those students found their passion for facilitating screen locations and are now working in the industry. Luke regularly offers consultation for scouting & management training as part Ecomlocations, and he most recently delivered a 4-day work show for Parramatta’s ACE.
